Amazon's €16 billion: the 3,000 confirmed jobs are in logistics
Amazon will invest €16 billion in Germany in 2027. Here is where the cloud, AI and logistics jobs are likely to be, and how to get ready now.
In this article
Amazon says it will invest €16 billion in Germany in 2027. It announced this on 20 October 2026 at the government's first "Invest in Germany Summit" in Berlin.
If you work in IT, you'll want to know what this means for tech jobs. Read the split first. The one hard job number is for warehouses, not data centres.
What does Amazon's German investment mean for tech jobs?
The money goes into four areas.
- Frankfurt: €4.8 billion for AWS cloud and AI infrastructure.
- Berlin: a second robotics and AI research lab, which doubles Amazon's research footprint in the capital.
- Logistics: over 3,000 new jobs across Germany.
- Other: the Amazon Leo satellite internet network and more than 15 new Prime Video productions in Germany.
AWS (Amazon Web Services) is Amazon's cloud business. Companies rent computing power and data storage from it instead of buying their own servers.
Here is my reading. The 3,000 jobs figure belongs to logistics. I haven't seen a job number for the cloud or research parts. So treat tech roles as likely, not promised.
Which cloud and AWS roles will grow in Frankfurt?
The €4.8 billion goes to the Frankfurt region. Two roles fit this work. Cloud architects design how a company's systems run in the cloud. AI/ML specialists build machine learning systems (software that learns from data).
This isn't Amazon's first big German bet. In June 2024, it announced €10 billion, which included €8.8 billion for AWS data centres. In January 2026, the AWS European Sovereign Cloud became available in Brandenburg. It has a planned €7.8 billion investment through 2040, so that European data stays under European rules.
Since 2010, Amazon has invested about €100 billion in Germany. That makes Germany one of its most important markets.
The German government wants this kind of money. Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Economic Affairs Minister Katherina Reiche are pushing to attract private investment, cut bureaucracy and make Germany a leader in industrial AI (AI used in industry).
What will Berlin's new robotics and AI lab need?
Berlin gets the second lab. Amazon is expanding its applied science and engineering teams there.
An applied scientist uses research to build products that work in real life. Robotics roles include hardware engineers (who build the machines) and software engineers (who write the code that runs them).
If you are a STEM graduate from a German university, this is your clearest way in. Many of us study here, and a Berlin lab that hires graduates is a real pipeline.
Which cities get the new logistics jobs?
Logistics is spread across eight places. Two are new centres and six are upgrades.
| Place | What happens | When |
|---|---|---|
| Zweibrücken | New fulfilment centre (a warehouse that packs and ships orders) | Opens in 2026 |
| Könnern | New fulfilment centre | Being built |
| Bad Hersfeld, Dortmund, Werne | Existing centres modernised | By 2027 |
| Koblenz, Pforzheim, Rheinberg | Existing centres modernised | By 2028 |
The roles to watch are operations managers, logistics coordinators and supply chain analysts. A supply chain analyst studies data on how goods move from supplier to customer.
Before you accept any offer, read our post on how to check a German job offer first.
How can Indian IT professionals get ready?
Don't wait for a job post. Start now.
- Pick a city. Frankfurt for cloud and AWS, Berlin for robotics and AI research, and the eight logistics places above for supply chain work.
- Get certified. Take AWS cloud architecture and AI/ML framework certifications. These are the technologies that get the €4.8 billion.
- Watch the source. Check the official Amazon Jobs portal at amazon.jobs and filter by the German cities.
- Check your visa route. See the next section.
Which visa works for these jobs?
If you apply from India, or you are moving from a student visa, check the EU Blue Card first. The 2026 salary limit is €50,700 a year gross (your pay before tax), which is about €4,225 a month. For shortage jobs, it is €45,934 a year, about €3,830 a month.
Which limit applies to you depends on your job. Our post on which Blue Card threshold is yours explains it.
If you don't have an offer yet, the Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card) lets you come to Germany to look for work and attend interviews. We scored three profiles in our post on the Chancenkarte for Indian applicants.
One step for this week: set a job alert on amazon.jobs for Frankfurt and Berlin. Then add one AWS or AI/ML certificate to your study plan.
